two-part installation (transmitter/receiver)
a vhs tape loop transmits an 8 second video via antenna
to a contained pocket tv across the room
This project came about from reflecting on my early-childhood exposure to pornography and its lasting influence. The technology and materials used in this installation are referential to that moment in my past, while also presenting an expansive narrative on the accessibility of adult media. The manipulation and configuration of vhs tape, vcr, and monitor points to the process through which memories, although characterized by their prolonged impact on the psyche, deteriorate and become distorted as they appear in present experience.
ROGER'S TRANSMISSION (BFA THESIS PROJECT), 2021
cast aluminum, polyester suit, felt, pink foam, poultry netting, paper, wire shelving, camcorder, tv, antennas, theremin, signal amplifiers, processing program, computer
the goal was to construct a “machine” that when viewed would change or produce something new. the viewer’s interaction shouldn’t be so obvious and the “new” produced work would also be affected by the contingent variables related to signal interference.
i chose to create this interaction by turning the cat head into a theremin’s pitch antenna. the varying pitch signal produced by the theremin is then converted into a midi signal which is read by a program written in processing. the program uses live camera feed and pre-loaded video to create a new video composite whose appearance is dictated by the varying signals. the audio is a mix of the signal produced by the theremin (running through effects) and the sounds that were added to the pre-recorded videos. the video/audio produced is then transmitted via antenna from the computer running the program (sitting at the base of the sculpture) to the tv on the wire shelving unit.
